101 in action

AM class

techniques-

-replace guard from half guard when opponent has crossface and underhook locked up

-transition from locked up half guard bottom to butterfly sweep

rolling

i feel like my game just took a giant leap since the training at stronghold. felt a lot more calm, i had everything more under control, and i didn't feel much in danger at all. part of it is because of after rolling with mike, everyone else seems a lot more manageable.

-lifting with hooks while controlling the opposite side sleeve can lead to some sweeps sometimes

-breaking down posture in the guard and using the high guard with shin control works wonders. head control is essential- it takes a lot out of someone when you're always pulling them down while also setting up sweeps and submissions.

-if they are too far away to grab their head, start climbing the collar like a rope and pull them down! do it when they start to use arms to open guard up.

-hipping out and threatening a sweep will stop someone from what they're doing oftentimes.

-bottom half guard when opponent has underhook and crossface- the eddie bravo "jaws of life" is actually a really good option to regain the underhook. combines the swim move with the forearm in throat to an extent.

-once someone has their head up in guard, they can start to pass. never let them get posture.

-strong open guard requires all four of your limbs to be doing something. foot in hip, hook, grabbing sleeve, grabbing lapel, etc. your hands and feet should not be empty.

-kimuras open the door to so many things- sweeps, better position, other submissions, etc. holding on and keeping it threatened will shut down a big part of someone's game. they can't advance before dealing with the kimura!

-if you get swept from half guard top, replace guard in the transition. much better than being half guard bottom.

-shin control on an open rubber guard still leads to triangles, omoplatas, and lots of other stuff. just have to latch on to gi while climbing into better position with legs.

-de la riva guard works better when you have the lapel or a sleeve or both.

-the 101 pass, and even its posture/setup, opens the doors to so many passes. i worked it slowly and still had great success. even if you get trapped in half guard, you are still in good position to pass, and it's even more tiring for them.

-that forward pressure with shin in 101 pass is very important in wearing down the opponent's defense

-the marcelo half guard pass is so freaking good. it works so well. that's one more GOOD pass to add to the arsenal.

-if someone brings your triangle to the side to alleviate the choke, start to grab the collar to threaten collar chokes. also threaten the armbar. that's three submissions at once on a trapped side! so many options.

-always look to attack a bent arm lock once you have the triangle locked up. it helps to bring you to the side, kills that arm for their defense, and threatens TWO submissions at once.

-flowing with the guard passes is very good. start with a base pass and then branch out to others depending what they do. PATIENCE when passing.
