Marcelo Garcia- Winning Techniques of Submission Grappling (series 1) vol. 3- the Guard Pass

attitude of Marcelo's guard passes- speed- being ahead of opponent

being a move ahead
can't let them get hands on you
can't let them impose their game on you.

impose your game on them

pass #1
control knees, pin one side to ground
toriani pass (foot beside thigh above knee)
control underhook

they either grab leg or hip out
doesn't matter- get underhook and crossface

important- can't take too long- once you pin their knee down
once you plant foot, fence arm under armpit

move looks easy, but once you train it a lot, it will work always

pass #2
counter to opponent moving for leg
they start attacking leg looking for sweep

if you wait too long, they will get sweep

we don't want that

ALWAYS be a step ahead.

IMMEDIATELY fence arm under armpit if they attack leg
trap leg with other knee, grab the crossface, 101 pass across diagonally

they lock half guard? drive with crossface in other direction, they can't follow

training and good timing= everything is possible

grip- crossface and underhook- grasp together, drive shoulder

another option- you miss the underhook
they attack leg again
another option

you miss the arm under armpit

swing other leg around (capoeira pass) with speed
use that knee to trap leg
pick up that leg (underhook) to sit down and pass

they grip around your thigh and shoulder (half cradle)
dig arm in across, walk elbow back as far into armpit as possible

free leg on thigh, push away and get hip out- put on top of head

butterfly pass

opponent grabs leg
fence arm underneath armpit

response-opponent sits back- you are in open guard
work the underhooks with hands next to body

underhooks on bottom just like on top

elbows tight in - forearms tight
don't let go
lock down body
use head to help- keep tight against chest
negate the underhooks- walk the knees towards him
knees and elbows together

opponent starts moving to create space-
you make move
go opposite side of where you're looking
lift legs high (headstand motion), drop knee against hip, and pass guard

the higher you go, the better

must do with a lot of speed and momentum
use elbows to help get legs high

if you don't get the legs high enough- you can get put back in guard

another pass from butterfly- they start pushing head
opponent uses arms to get head off body
can't lose head

lower hands, trap legs together and drive them to side you're looking at

opponent is pushing head
you're below hips- must get higher

hop legs to side they push you- and then look to other side
keep repeating
you get higher and higher each time

another butterfly pass

they defend by pushing the head with a little more strength

they push head and sit up to butterfly
they take hooks out

can't wait! or they will start attacking
thus, you must attack first

can't hold back- this attitude helped Marcelo in ADCC 2003

immediately push knee down (thumb in- most secure)
and underhook thigh
move knee in against thigh (same side of underhooked thigh)
other knee in as well

any time they try to hook you, pull them on top of you

far leg on shoulder
stretch hand to opposite shoulder
stand up, drive weight down with shoulders on top of hips (leg on shoulder pass)
don't loosen weight chest down on thigh
legs can't come back
control and follow with hands- establish side control posture

careful, you are in danger of triangle possibly

more details from last pass- possible double underhook variant

opponent pushes you away

pin leg down (thumb inside)
underhook other leg
don't hesistate

negate hooks by moving knees in, pull them towards you

detail: leg planted on ground
whole hand in, jam elbow to mat (rather than just thumb)

opponent counters- weighs leg down so you can't get it on your shoulder
you go under thigh with other hand- go double underhooks
lift hips up and pull them towards you- negate space between you

decide which way to pass- put shoulder on that thigh

step over (trap leg)
take hand out once leg is trapped
push knee through with arm (tight elbows vs. possible kimura)
at the same time- shoulder on midsection- bring (kick) leg over from other side
(shoulder prevents half guard)

same position, counter pass

butterfly with knees out
opponent controls elbows, flexes legs

now you are in a spider guard variant
can't bring hands out from top

make sure you still control bottom- pinch knees and drive feet together

bottom is exposed- you can roll hands out from bottom

roll one hand out and weave through legs
put other hand on thigh- grab around to other thight, drive legs down towards that side
smash down the legs, control with chin and whatever else you can to keep tight

if opponent just stays there, just move and establish side control

if he moves out the top leg (the one trapped by chin)- bring knee diagonally across (like 101 beginning)
put knee over thigh

weight down on them
step over
shoot hand through and grab underhook
get double underhooks

opponent tries to lock half guard

sprawl out and go to side control

other option- wait for them to move- go to mount (depending how they react)

same position, different counter

from butterfly, opponent flat
they push you with forearm in throat and sit up

they go for underhooks- pull upper body towards you
just hugging on back, not lifting hands up in the air

you pull your hands back and sit on heels
hands push knees together- SLAM them together hard and fast

they try and maintain underhooks- DON'T try and put back on floor- might get swept

IMMEDIATELY squat, hop on feet

keep knees together, drive weight down
in transition- push down with hands to stay heavy- or you will lose position, might get swept

jump over to mount

move looks easy, but it's got to be trained constantly

you will be able to establish your game on opponents
