Marcelo Garcia- Winning Techniques of Submission Grappling (series 1) vol. 4- the X-Guard

from start

opponent standing, trying to pass guard

guy standing- your objective-
try to get hooks under armpits
leg hooks at knees

pull them to you (they base out on all fours or sit)

setups

when you try to pull opponent to guard, they pull back and start moving

must follow opponent, can't just stay where you're at

hand posted, other hand defending (butt scoot)while looking to engage opponent

look for legs, underhooks under armpits

leg that is posted is helping you move- drag self with heel

once you engage

opponent distracts you- pushes your head with hand

look for underhooks and hooks!
forget about the hands on your head

keep coming forward looking for what you want

distractions= throw you off your game

get close to opponent

dig hands under armpits, get butterfly hooks

look for sweep, submission--> advance jiu jitsu

bigger opponents- putting hands in face, moving well, throwing you off your game
don't fall into that trap

you're smaller- fight your game, not their game

keep focused on what you want to achieve- control the situation

more distractions

they push on head and shoulders

STILL looking for what you want

hands on shoulders- trying to push you down on the mat= don't let it happen

hands on shoulders- slip hands up, pummel inside

if they try to come on top, get underhooks and butterfly hooks

they are trying to get your back on mat- establish your control

they will always drop weight down- won't just fight one leg, arm at a time
very important- when you fight, don't let them stay a step ahead of you

stay with opponent whereever they go

not always easy- must work through it

don't want to be lost or distracted from game

your jiu jitsu- always moving forwards, concentrating on moving forward, being a step ahead

distractions aren't working

they start lifting your legs- try to put your back on mat

they lift your hips off mat

can't let them establish anything

fence hands out- smack them off

immediately smack hands off, put hooks in

they pull upper body out- you keep following through

they closer you get, the better for you

motion- they grab ankles
you break and control wrists, shoot for underhooks

hooks at legs, hands on thighs

they prevent underhooks with shoulder stiffarms

keep bf hooks, keep ahold of thighs, keep in range

they back up and try to get out of range- you lower legs to stop heels, and then lift back to behind knees once they stop pulling back

when you smack the hands off shoulders, it takes support off- they are dropping weight on you

another distraction and counter

pushing of shoulders and head is not doing anything- you are getting to them

they hold ankles, put weight down- pin legs and feet so they can't move
you'll be in trouble if you stay here long

fence hands- from outside or inside- from top is best, in position to get underhooks
break grips and control underhooks
get bf hooks

puts weight down and starts moving to one side
go to opposite side arm- trap wrist, armdrag
hooks on legs- help you go to back or just sweep

arm drag option- break grips forwards open fingers
go to back! sweep!

hooks always follow the legs-FUNDAMENTAL

cartwheel defense

they try to cartwheel!

be ready for the unpredictable

hand in front of face- delay what they are trying so you can follow up with defense

they cartwheel and try to take back- tuck head and roll forward, hooks in
if the chest touches upper back, no good

setting the x-guard
hold on to opponent as they try to pull back
hands to back of thighs

get one hand diagonally across

other hand posts, you move hips closer to opponent (like a leg drag)

hook with arm (get secure first, adjust in a second)
get cross hooks- x guard beginnings

they try to keep moving- you must get them off balance, break the balance

if they move around, they will get away

hand grabbing leg- bring knee to shoulder while lifting other leg off ground

spread his weight out, he is off balance

push him out- lots of options

the sweep

they escape underhooks

you establish x-guard control

leg on shoulder- break balance

they respond- drive knee on shoulder- put all weight down on that side
if you wait too long, you will lose this position

take off your front hook- plant on floor behind him

lift up hook and hold ankle (lift off floor!)- help to sweep him
sit up, lift knee and push out (tension like spider guard)
swing back leg to get momentum to sit up

main difficulty- can't use hands to support you to sit up- use leg as pendulum

another variation

underhooks and bf hooks
opponent pulls back
diagonally across

x guard posture

opponent counters with knee down

sweep or lose position!

opponent is basing out properly, you can't sweep with pendulum

lift hook
add second hook
now two legs on one

must use momentum of legs to help get up

lift opponent towards you and then go forward- use momentum to take in other direction

same position, learning control
from x-guard posture

opponent has good balanced, stays with you

make sure leg doesn't stay still- always lifting in different ways- always off balance

he puts weight down on one leg? disrupt balance on other leg. back and forth
make him work

always maintain control of situation

more control

from x-guard

opponent bases out, tries to push hooks off

they will escape if you don't do anything

either drive leg forward or backwards

counter with opposite of what they do.

drive lower part of leg forward, upset balance

always be attuned to what opponent is doing

sweep variation

from x-guard posture

open hooks to disrupt balance

they drop hands on ground

you do what is most easy

leg on shoulder OFF ground
grab close hand, tuck in, lift hips, make them come over that shoulder that you control

land in opponent's guard ready to pass

variation of sweep

when you go for hand, they pull it out and hide it

can't wait too long or they stand up and you have to go over again

go for other hand immediately!

pull far hand towards head

lift far leg up, extend hips out, take them over

land in side control

another variation

from x-guard posture

disrupt balance, go for close hand, far hand

they counter and take both hands out, stand

they post hands all the way out- towards your feet so you can't grab
all weight is towards upper body- leg is light

take hooks out, stand up

ankle pick posted leg

pass the guard

anything they did, you always have a response- no matter what direction they move in
