Marcelo Garcia- Winning Techniques of Submission Grappling (series 1) vol. 5- Sweeps

setup
from opponent standing

you have underhooks, butterfly hooks

they put weight down on you and force you to play bf guard.

beginnings

grab on shoulder (no gi)

his objective- put your back to the floor
with your back on the floor, you have limited options- not much leverage

can't hold someone long in butterfly

when they try to drive your back to floor, use his energy against him

lift hooks up, take one hook out, slip hips out, go to back! (trap knee)
(if you don't do this, you get flattened)

taking the back from butterfly
whatever they try to use, you use against them

side where your head is- side you are going to escape to

from elevated butterfly- plant foot and hip escape
come to knees and lock around waist with arms

opponent response- they lock their legs together once you elevate
pull hands up- get them away from legs
opponent playing from knees

you bf lift them, they lock legs together and pinch knees- you can't escape hips

you sit up with them and get to feet (like deck squat), hug lower back (double underhooks)and drive chest to chest, put weight down on him

once you sweep, you stick to them- set up next move, don't let them go
or you start over again! you don't want that

a sweep
sweep opponent to side where your head is

opponent not doing much- not pushing, backing up- pretty much stuck
they will eventually do something

lift hands up- switch to overhook on head side- tuck elbow in TIGHT

use opposite hook to sweep
same side leg slides through

sweep at 45 degree angle- fall to shoulder, not back
lift hook up

once you get to shoulder- leg on ground adjusts- hip out slightly, come to toes to sweep high

a variation of the sweep- if they post in range of your legs
from underhook on same side head- lift arm up, let hand go, tuck and trap it tight

opponent posts when you go to sweep

KEEP HOOK LIFTING ALWAYS
get hips out more to hooks side, keep hand trapped tight
free leg comes out and pushes base leg out on thigh

another counter- they post somewhere farther
opponent plants leg higher, near your shoulder

keep arm trapped against ribcage
other underhook strikes up high to take out free arm that would post

underhook posted leg
straighten hook out and take them the other way

more counters- they post and weave their arm to stop you

good against bigger guys

don't let them distract you from your game
they can hold onto your head- don't lose focus

always using their momentum against them

tuck arm in, look for sweep

you look to underhook posted leg
opponent fences far arm under armpit- weaves through (like an open overhook)

your hand grabs onto wrist- pinches elbow tight
once you have wrist-
grab leg, straighten hook and kick opponent over

put weight on top of arm you have once you move to side control

armdrag counter
opponent puts forearm into throat- drives you away
backs up and grabs ankles

you don't have leverage to hold onto underhook

if you wait too long, you can get passed

you grab wrist on same side
grab elbow and drive it out, like arm drag - break grip to where fingers are open
take leg out
drive opponent's face and head to mat
other leg sticks between his legs

come to knees
trap his knee- like unlocked triangle

keep everything tight

failed armdrag counter

you go for armdrag, opponent locks legs so you can't get leg out

keep arm trapped across chest
drive your head on chest, grab underhook/overhook on side of trapped arm- wrist control arm goes around to back (join hands)

pull opponent towards you

lift up hook a little, stretch other hook and take opponent to side, sweep them over- keep arm trapped the whole time

establish side control

even more counters! double underhook sweep

from armdrag

they yank arm out and trap knees

immediately go in with head- get double underhooks
keep posture good
pull towards you!
use feet to help you get hips to side (now you are on shoulder)

sweep to side opposite where head is looking- first go to side you are looking

stretch knee out to take base out- stretch hips out underneath them

pull opponent to you and look for sweep (they are on top)

movement is towards waist, not hands

bridge to other side, land on side control

more counters- move to takedowns

from arm drag

they lock knees, yank arm out

you get double underhooks with head posted on chest

they stand up and put forearm in throat, post leg
you shoot underneath

sit up, drive them forward, pull their hips towards you

if they base out near you- ankle pick and sweep them

don't wait! immediately go

they post OTHER leg- opposite where you are looking-
put hand over his leg- double leg takedown
