Some Half Guard Passes

from Marcelo Garcia's gi series...

1. from half guard
they start to underhook, IMMEDIATELY you counter by weaving your other arm through and walking it up towards their head. drop elbow, control back of jacket to help secure the position. don't let them get under your arm again.

goal is to get weight centered on upper torso.

switch hips to face legs. sit on hip. slide free knee to his hip.

free hand pushes the half guard past the knee. control the knee.

switch hips so non-trapped leg is inside. use to pry- back hips up and use free leg to push on their half guard and gradually free your leg until you just have foot trapped.

weight is on chest so he can't sweep you.

free that foot, immediately plant on floor (prevent bridge)

walk to north/south, grab on belt line.

2. from half guard, they get the strong underhook

sit on their thigh and do a capoeria back kick and land on the other side of the half guard. they try to underhook again, you block with your arm and start walking it up the same way as the previous pass. difference- the back is OFF the floor on this pass. grab on jacket. goal- try to squeeze both of his arms together.

left foot is already free, a little easier- use as a base.

push leg with free foot, scoot hip, go to north/south. chest against chest.

have to stay on floor and stay under arm- can't let him get arm under to grab your leg.
